Destiny Lore – The Ahamkaras

The Ahamkaras were an ancient species of dragon-like reptilian-birds that appeared on Earth very shortly after the Traveler had arrived. It was said in legend that these “dragons” had the powers to grant any wish, which made many go out on the hunt for them so that they may have all their dreams come true. However, in order to have your wish granted by an Ahamkara, you would have to make a bargain. Most believe that these bargains were not worth their risk and opted to instead hunt the Ahamkara’s down to extinction so nobody would have to worry about them again. However, this is just what was believed by the public. The true meaning of the Great Hunt was instead because the Ahamkaras had an infinite amount of knowledge, as they were supposedly brought on by the Traveler itself. They knew answers to questions that no one had, or would dare, to ask. It would make a lot of sense that they would be sought after to be killed. After all, knowledge is power.

Interestingly enough, the Warlocks may have been the group to hunt them down to extinction, rather than the Hunters, Titans, or a combination of any of the three. Not even the greatest Hunter or the brawniest of Titans were able to successfully defeat one of these massive beasts. The Warlocks may have had a separate interest in the Ahamkaras rather than just hunting them. As we know, Warlocks are meant to study all that is the Traveler. And because the Ahamkaras may have a connection to the Traveler, of course the Warlocks would be interested. But there could be an even darker history around these dragons.

If we look at the many pieces of gear that are formed from the fossilized remains of the Ahamkaras, we can see that these fossils still hold some sort of power, and even possibly some control over the Guardians that equip the armor. The bones have a will of their own and possess a history of also leading their wearer into danger. The Warlocks have a understanding of reality and it is believed that the Ahamkaras would love to feast on this knowledge and attempt to convince you that you are also hungry. Let’s take a look at a couple of pieces of Ahamkara gear by starting at a Hunter’s piece:

Young Ahamkara’s Spine – Give me your arm, oh bearer mine. Let me help you fill the world with teeth.

and a surprising Warlock’s piece that you may not have guessed is related:

Voidfang Vestments – “YOU WILL DREAM OF TEETH AND NOTHING ELSE” – scratched behind a buckle.

Both interesting statements. It’s as if the Ahamkara want to feast open something, perhaps the Void? Reality? Surely it couldn’t be the Light? The Traveler is supposedly the reason that these creatures started appearing? Well perhaps they aren’t under the Traveler at all, but rather against it. Look at the way these creatures speak within grimoire. Their mannerisms and way of speech is strikingly similar to the Worms mentioned within the Book of Sorrows. Is there a darker secret between these two entities? Are they somehow related within the Void? This is starting to dive more into a speculation, so we will save the rest for another time.

That’s it for today’s lore, Guardians. I’ve been wanting to do some Ahamkara’s lore for quite sometime and it feels nice to finally put some of these thoughts into words to share with you all. If you liked this, let us know. If you didn’t like this, let us know anyway. I love hearing feedback from you all and still need your suggestions for future lore, so keep them coming!
